In Queensland there is a growing recognition of the value of design teachers as holding an important role within schools.
The “21st Century competencies” may have been around a long time, but it is only in this century that they are being given their due recognition as being critical for student success post-schooling: creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. Design is the area of schooling that best trains students for these metacognitive abilities and it is increasingly being found across curricula.
The need for competent design teachers within schools is growing. From the movement towards project-based and inquiry based leaning, to the adoption of integrated STEM, to the new QCAA Senior Design Curriculum and the ACARA Technologies Curricula (Digitech and D&T), design teachers are in high demand.
This website is about supporting Design Teachers in their professional development, from initial teacher education right through to expertise within the profession. We are a group of academics working with Education Queensland, teacher organisations, and teacher educators to provide teachers with what they need.
